Benefits of Health Insurance

Health insurance offers a wide array of benefits to the insured. Following are some of the key benefits of a health insurance plan.
  • Comprehensive Coverage
  • A comprehensive health insurance policy provides coverage for significant healthcare expenses that may arise during medical emergencies. Typically, these insurance plans offer protection for in-patient hospitalization expenses, pre- and post-hospitalization expenses, ambulance services, domiciliary hospitalization expenses, daycare procedures, organ donor expenses, etc.
  • Lifetime Renewability
  • In accordance with the guidelines stipulated by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA), health insurance companies are required to provide lifetime renewability benefits to policyholders. This provision enables policyholders to renew their health insurance policies without any upper age limit restrictions. This feature is particularly advantageous for individuals in the elderly demographic and parents, as it alleviates the need to seek new health insurance plans during their advanced years.
  • Cashless Treatment
  • Insurance companies establish affiliations with specific hospitals, referred to as network hospitals, to facilitate cashless treatment for policyholders. When policyholders seek treatment at these network hospitals, the insurance company directly settles the medical bills on their behalf. As a result, policyholders are not obligated to make any payments for the availed treatment, except for non-medical expenses incurred during their stay.
  • Portability
  • Health insurance portability enables policyholders to transfer their health insurance coverage from their current insurance provider to another, should they find their existing health insurance plan unsatisfactory or identify a more suitable alternative. This portability feature safeguards policyholders from being subjected to substandard service and provides them with the flexibility to switch insurers in instances of dissatisfaction.
  • Tax Benefits Under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, 1961
  • The Indian government encourages the adoption of health insurance by providing tax exemptions on health insurance premiums paid, as per Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Individuals can avail tax deductions of up to Rs. 1.5 lakh. Specifically, one can claim a deduction of up to Rs. 25,000 for health insurance coverage for oneself, spouse, and dependent children. Additionally, tax deductions of up to Rs. 25,000/Rs. 50,000 can be claimed for health insurance plans purchased for parents aged 60 years or more than 60 years. These tax incentives aim to incentivize individuals to invest in health insurance and secure comprehensive coverage for themselves and their families.
